Entries Due for Dallas Water Wise Landscape Tour

The 20th annual Water-Wise Landscape Tour is open to all landscapes of Dallas Water Utilities customers. Previous award winners are invited to participate in the tour, but may not compete for prizes for five years after being a winning landscape. Tour judges, sponsors, City of Dallas employees or their families are not eligible for prizes. The Water-Wise Landscape Tour is co-sponsored by Dallas Water Utilities Conservation, City of Dallas Stormwater Management, Dallas County Master Gardener Association, Inc., and Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension.

• The tour will feature landscapes (back yard landscapes may be included at the discretion of the homeowner).

• Up to five residential award winners will receive prizes. One morning and one afternoon volunteer will assist on tour day. Demonstration gardens and commercial landscapes will not be eligible for prizes or volunteers on tour day.

• All entrants must agree that their landscapes may be photographed for publicity and educational purposes.

• All winners must agree to be present to answer visitor questions from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on tour day.

Judging Criteria

• Design

Aesthetic appeal; composition; use of color and plant variety

• Water Conservation

Efficient irrigation/water use; use of non-vegetative materials such as fences, walls, walks, etc.; use of native or adapted plants; reduced turf area; and use of mulches

• Appropriate Maintenance

Landscape tidy – healthy, disease and pest free plants; no weeds; plants pruned as appropriate

Dallas Announces Art Week (April 5-15)

Mayor Mike Rawlings and the City of Dallas Cultural Affairs Commission announce the 2nd annual Dallas Arts Week to be held April 5 to 13, 2014. Dallas Arts Week 2014 features more than 80 arts and cultural events in venues across the city: from Downtown to Fair Park; Northeast Dallas to Oak Cliff, and all points in-between!

Dallas Arts Week 2014 encourages residents and visitors to participate in Dallas’ arts and cultural offerings by experiencing the community’s creative resources and enjoying the breadth of activities; from festivals and plays, to concerts, exhibitions and literary events. This city-wide initiative highlights the vibrant arts and cultural sector of Dallas that, year-round, features myriad opportunities to engage in creative activities. Campaign partners include the Business Council for the Arts and KERA’s Art&Seek.

“Dallas Arts Week is a fantastic opportunity for the citizens and visitors of Dallas to experience the passion and vibrancy of the arts in our city,” Mayor Mike Rawlings said. “It allows people to experience the arts, engage in conversation about the arts, and realize the power of the arts.”

On April 8, Mayor Rawlings will moderate the Creative Conversation panel discussion to further the dialogue about the contributions of Dallas’ creative sector on the overall success of the city. The event takes place at Dallas City Performance Hall and is sponsored by the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau. The event is free and open to the public.

KERA’s Art&Seek has developed a dedicated calendar of events listings for Dallas Arts Week, providing a comprehensive online resource for all activities (www.artandseek.org/artsweek). A Facebook page for social media postings is available at www.facebook.com/DallasArtsWeek. Residents and visitors wishing to share their arts experiences are invited to participate by posting their comments and photographs on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at #DallasArtsWeek.

Dallas Arts Week 2014 commences with ARTsPARK, an annual celebration of the arts presented by the Business Council for the Arts and held at NorthPark Center. ARTsPARK is a family-friendly festival of arts and culture. Now spanning two days, ARTsPARK includes performances, hands-on activities and demonstrations. ARTsPARK After Dark is a ticketed social event that takes place from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday, April 4. ARTsPARK is a free event that takes place from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m., Saturday, April 5, 2014.

The community-wide Dallas Arts Week celebration takes place at venues across the city with programs for all ages and interests. See Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s Spring Fiesta! in the Arts District (April 9 and 10), the Undermain Theatre’s regional premiere of We’re Proud to Present a Presentation … in Deep Ellum (April 5 to 12), Cambalache Teatro en Español’s La muerte y la doncella at the Bath House Cultural Center in East Dallas, or learn how to Make a Plate at the Kittrell/Riffkind Gallery in North Dallas.

Musical offerings include the Dallas Opera’s Barber of Seville on stage at the Winspear Opera House (April 5, 11 and 13), the Texas Camerata at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library (April 6) , and the Cool Thursday Concerts at the Dallas Arboretum (April 10).

Visual art exhibitions ongoing through the week include the Chrysalis fiber arts exhibition at the Texas Discovery Gardens in Fair Park, a retrospective of work by Dallas native David Bates at the Nasher Sculpture Center, the 11th Annual Hecho en Dallas exhibition at the Latino Cultural Center, and public art tours of the Love Field Art Collection at Dallas Love Field Airport (April 8 to 10).

Family-friendly activities include the Crow Collection of Asian Art’s Kids Club (April 5) at the Trinity River Audubon Center, the Culture Out of School Open House at the South Dallas Cultural Center, and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s Play Along Concert (April 11 and 12) at the Meyerson Symphony Center.

Festivals abound during Dallas Arts Week and include the Dallas International Film Festival (April 3 to 13), the 20th Annual Deep Ellum Arts Festival (April 4 to 6), Dallas Art Fair (April 11 to 13) and Dance Planet 18 (April 12 and 13).

National Severe Weather Preparedness Week

When it comes to severe weather, being prepared could be a matter of life and death. Last year alone, the North Central Texas Region reported 25 confirmed tornadoes, 259 cases of hail damage, and 23 instances of flash flooding.

“Being prepared for emergencies or disasters is critical to the safety of you and your family,” said Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Director Rocky Vaz, “We want citizens to take full advantage of the resources we have available to help them plan for severe weather.”  Here are a few ways to be better prepared during a weather emergency:
 
Know your risk – Understand the type of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather could impact you and your family. Check the weather forecast regularly, obtain a NOAA Weather Radio and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts. Severe weather comes in many forms and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazards.

In addition to tornadoes and damaging hail, Dallas residents are also at risk from flooding. Citizens can use an interactive map to find areas affected by flood by using the rain gauge and flooded roadway warning system data available at: http://fc.dallascityhall.com

Have what you need: This includes an emergency supply kit in your home, vehicle, office or school.  These kits should have basic items such as food, water and important medications.

Know what to do:  Having an emergency plan is essential to ensuring that family members know what to do and know who to call after a storm. Select a meeting spot at a designated location for family members to rally after a storm. Consider selecting an out-of-town contact for all family members to check in with.  It is often easier to make a call out of an impacted area, than within one.
Stay informed:  Enable wireless emergency alerts on your phone and sign up for community alerting systems, such as the City’s GeoCast Notification System at: http://www.dallascityhall.com/oem/oem_geoCast.html. Be an example – Share your preparedness story with friends and family. Letting others know you’re prepared will prompt them to prepare as well. Sign up for training through the many programs offered by the City of Dallas.  This includes joining the Dallas Community Emergency Response Team  or taking SKYWARN® weather spotter courses.
“Preparing starts with you, so we encourage residents to have what they need; have a plan and be informed about emergencies,” Vaz said.

Landscape designer and author Bonnie Reese of Beautiful Landscapes  will be the speaker at both sessions. Dallas City Public Hearing on Budget

The City of Dallas will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 to receive citizens’ comments on the proposed FY 2014-15 Operating, Capital, and Grant/Trust Budgets. Members of the public wishing to make comments are invited to attend the public hearing, which will be held not earlier than 1 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, Dallas City Hall, 6th floor, 1500 Marilla St.

Dallas City Mobile Collection of Batteries, Oil, Paint and Antifreeze

The City of Dallas will collect used batteries, motor oil and oil filters, latex paint, and antifreeze (BOPA) at its fourth mobile collection this Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Southwest Center Mall (3662 W. Camp Wisdom Road) at 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The City will give away free household cleaning products, which have been donated for reuse, in exchange for your BOPA.  Dallas residents and residents of hazardous waste member cities must bring a driver’s license or a utility bill to show proof of residency to participate.

The City of Dallas BOPA mobile is in partnership with Dallas County Household Hazardous Waste and is prepared in cooperation with the North Central Texas Council of Governments through funding from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. As a service to our customers, City of Dallas Water Utilities is conducting FREE automatic irrigation system check-ups.

As we move into spring, now is a great time to have your system inspected by one of our licensed irrigation system professionals. They will help you make seasonal adjustments to your programming in order to maximize water savings. Poor irrigation scheduling, systems operating inefficiently and overwatering are the primary sources of landscape water waste.

These check-ups can help improve the efficiency of your existing irrigation system by identifying:

  • Programming errors
  • Leaks in the system
  • Broken or misaligned equipment
  • Problems with pressure (too high or too low)
  • Coverage problems

As part of the check-up, the irrigation specialists may also make recommendations such as:

  • Programming suggestions
  • Turf water requirements
  • Possible equipment upgrades
  • Repair and maintenance tips

Dallas City Charter Review Commission Meeting

The Charter Review Commission will conduct community meetings Feb. 11 and Feb. 15 to receive public comments on the charter review process. Meeting times and locations are:

City of Dallas Health Fair

Dallas Park and Recreation Department is hosting a free family-friendly health fair on Monday, Feb. 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fretz Recreation Center, 6950 Beltline Road. The fair is a one-stop shop for North Texans to get cutting-edge information that addresses critical health and social issues while connecting with area organizations that deliver a wide range of health resources.

The event kicks off a specially designed wellness initiative offered at Fretz and other City of Dallas recreation centers for adults 55 and older. Texercise, a free 12-week nutrition and exercise program, is a series of incentive-based activities to encourage participants to eat healthy and do daily exercise.

Families can get information and useful tips on such topics as Medicare, Medicaid, diabetes prevention, fitness trends and nutrition. Senior adults and individuals of all ages with disabilities will find health resources tailored for their needs.

Dallas Junior Police Acacademy

The Dallas Junior Police Academy it is holding an ADVANCED class for students in the 8th, 9th, and 10th grade on Saturday, February 8, 2014. The class will be held at the Dallas Police Academy and the students will take field trips to Dallas Police Headquarters and the 911/Communications Center at Dallas City Hall.

Classes fill up very quickly, so please send your application in as soon as possible. You can fax, mail or email your application to Sgt. Cheryl Cornish.
